Description
This is a rare Civil War era backbar bitters bottle made by Walton & Harris of New York....it has a large bold raised decorations around a sunken oval window panel on front that originally would have taken a label under glass that read BITTERS or GIN or whatever it was made for.....The bottom of the bottle hasW & H
emb (with backward & symbol)...this stands for Walton & Harris.....Hand blown in mold, bimal...early smooth base...applied square ring collar...amber...round...11 3/8"tall...Good condition with only one small shallow chip on side of lip & a couple small chips on base edge; no other damage. Some light inside content haze. W.N.Walton patented a glass label for drugstore type bottles in 1862, but also had other patents relating to glass labels, etc. Walton & Harris were listed in the early 1860s as "Manufacturers of cut glass, glass letters, etc " on Broad Street in New York. Harris had left the partnership by 1866 so W.N.Walton continued by himself. This W&H marked bottle is from the pre 1866 period and is a very scarce bottle to find!........
